Join us for a 3-month programme, run in partnership with Imperial College Business School, that supports student teams to fast-track the commercial development of a new business idea.

The programme

 

The Summer Accelerator is a brand new three-month programme of mentoring, business coaching and peer-to-peer support, run in partnership with the Imperial College Business School. Participating teams will receive a £500 grant, with a further £1000 available to each team.

Taking place from July to September the programme supports student teams to fast track the commercial development of a new business idea, including monthly feedback sessions with expert mentors.

The September presentation will allow teams to demonstrate the development of their business, and have the chance to win the £5,000 top prize.

Below are details of the course components and key dates.

Participation in all the events detailed below is compulsory for all successful applicants. All events will be conducted online. The dates are currently provisional and may be subject to change.

INDUCTION SESSION

Monday 29 June 

Selected teams will attend an online induction session to meet the cohort, receive an introduction to the programme, and meet the programme team.

MENTOR PITCH SESSIONS

Wednesday 1 July, 5 August, 16 September

The mentor pitch sessions serve as the core checkpoints for the programme. Starting with a business pitch in the first session, you will continue to make monthly progress pitches to mentors. Mentors will provide feedback at each of these that will help inform the monthly goals you set out with your business coach. 

These pitches will be used to judge whether or not you have made the required progress to receive your monthly grant (£500 will be released in July and August if criteria are met). 

At the final session in September, teams will provide an overall pitch of the progress made, and mentors will award the top prize to the team they feel has made the most progress.

 

1-2-1 COACHING

Thursday 2 July, 6 August, and Wednesday 2 September

You receive 3 online business coaching sessions as part of the programme (45 minutes each).

Business coaching will allow you to review mentor feedback, set goals for the month and identify how to use your £500 grant.

Business coaching is also the perfect way to work through any challenges you may be facing, be it with your idea, your team or your next steps.

PEER-TO-PEER MENTORING

Wednesday 22 July and 19 August

During peer to peer mentoring sessions participating teams come together to share their experiences, challenges and next steps. It is a great way to learn from others and grow as a cohort!

Sessions will be 1h to 1h30.

Application requirements

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The programme is open to all students at Imperial with a business idea. To be accepted onto the programme, the team must:

  • Include at least one Imperial College Business School member (either a current student or recent alumni (graduated no earlier than 2017)).
  • The Team Lead must be an Imperial College London students or recent alumni (graduated no earlier than 2017).
  • The must be comprised of between two and five individuals.
  • Team members may be external, as long as the above criteria are fulfilled.
  • Teams must not have previously received any seed funding.
  • Teams must have already made clear and demonstratable progress in customer discovery and toward proof of concept or prototype stage.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Problem: Clear understanding and articulation of the problem and demonstrable knowledge of the issue.
  • Solution: Innovative and/or entrepreneurial idea backed by research.
  • Opportunity: There is a clear, defined and sizeable market opportunity
  • Traction: The team has completed customer discovery work and can demonstrate strong evidence of traction. 
  • Team: The team has the necessary skills and expertise, and commitment and availability, to deliver the work needed over the summer period.

Frequently asked questions

 

Can I submit several ideas?

Yes, you may submit several ideas should you wish to do so.

How advanced do teams have to be to apply?

Brand new ideas will not be accepted on to the programme. Teams that have made clear and demonstrable progress (e.g. customer discovery work, proof of concept, prototyping) are suitable for this programme.

Do you take any equity in my team/company?

No, this programme is designed to give you the skills to create your own company and carve out your own future with our highly experienced team’s support.

I haven't received a confirmation email after submitting my application, is this normal?

We are not sending out confirmation emails. Once you make your submission, you should see a message from FormAssembly thanking you for your submission appear on your screen.

When can I expect a reply regarding my application?

We aim to notify all applicants of their status by 5pm on 26 June.
